PROJECT HISTORY

CTDOT planned to start the I-84 Exit Renumbering project in 2026. The third to last interstate to have its exits revised to the milepost based system mandated by the FHWA. In early 2026, however, the project was removed from CTDOT's 12 month list of projects to be advertised. In an email to Jay Hogan a CTDOT sign engineer indicated the project had been postponed until 2027, no explanation given. On September 14, 2026 the project appeared again on the CTDOT project advertisement list, scheduled for December 30. When the project starts, the first 8 exits in the Danbury area will remain the same. New exit numbers may be given to the US 7 expressway at the same time.

EXIT RENUMBERING SIGN ILLUSTRATIONS

While we wait for the project to be advertised, I decided to use Sign Maker software to create approximations of the new exit number signs based on CTDOT's proposed numbers. I have not included those exits where the number will stay the same.

No Changes Between Exits 1 and 8

Current Exit 9:

The CT 25 exit is to be Exit 11.

Current Exit 10:

The US 6 West exit will be Exit 15.

Current Exit 11:

The CT 34 exit is to become Exit 16.

Current Exit 13 (EB):

The River Road exit will be Exit 18.

Current Exit 14:

The CT 172 exit is to be Exit 20.

Current Exit 15:

The US 6 East/CT 67 exit in Southbury will become Exit 21.

Current Exit 16:

The CT 188 exit will become Exit 24.

Current Exit 17:

The CT 63 exit is to be Exit 30, signed for Watertown and Naugatuck eastbound.

But Middlebury and Watertown westbound.

Current Exit 18:

The Chase Parkway exit is to be Exit 31 headed east.

But its for West Main Street and Highland Avenue headed west.

Current Exit 19:

The CT 8 North exit will become Exit 32A, a left exit headed east.

But a right exit headed west.

Current Exit 20:

The CT 8 South exit will become Exit 32B, a right exit headed east.

The westbound exit will be on the left side.

Current Exit 21 (WB):

The Meadow Street/Bank Street Exit on I-West will become Exit 32C.

Current Exit 22 (EB):

The Downtown Waterbury exit on I-84 East will be Exit 33A.

Current Exit 22 (WB):

The westbound version of Exit 33A is signed Union Street/Downtown Waterbury.

Current Exit 23 (EB):

The CT 69 exit on I-84 East will be Exit 33B, for Walcott and Prospect.

Current Exit 23 (WB):

While the CT 69 exit headed west is signed for Hamilton Avenue.

Current Exit 25:

The Harpers Ferry Road/Readville Drive exit on I-84 East will be Exit 34.

While westbound it will be for East Main Street and Scott Road and will be Exit 35.

Current Exit 25A:

The Austin Road exit, that had a suffix on I-84 East will be Exit 36.

Current Exit 26:

The CT 70 exit on I-84 East will be Exit 38, and signed for Cheshire.

While the CT 70 exit on I-84 West is signed for Cheshire and Prospect.

Current Exit 27:

The I-691 exit in Southington will be Exit 40A.

Current Exit 28:

The CT 322 exit will be Exit 40B and the control cities will be Marion and Milldale.

While on I-84 West, same exit number, same route but the cities are Marion and Wolcott.

Current Exit 29 (WB):

The CT 10 exit on I-84 West will be Exit 41.

Current Exit 30:

The West Main Street/Marion Avenue exit is to be Exit 42.

Current Exit 31:

The CT 229 Exit on I-84 East will be Exit 44, with Bristol on the eastbound sign.

But not heading west.

Current Exit 32:

The CT 10 / Queen Street exit will become Exit 46.

Current Exit 33

The CT 72 West Exit will be Exit 44, with a left exit headed east.

But the standard right exit headed west.

Current Exit 34 (EB)

The CT 372 / Crooked Street exit to become Exit 49.

Current Exit 35

The exit for CT 72 East will be Exit 50, on the left headed east.

The exit is on the right headed west with the addition of Middletown as a control city.

Current Exit 36

The Slater Road exit will become Exit 51, on the left headed east.

The exit is on the right headed west.

Current Exit 37

The I-84 East Exit for Fienemann Road is to be Exit 53 and includes To US 6 West.

The I-84 West Exit for Fienemann Road drops the US 6 West information.

Current Exit 38 (WB)

The I-84 West exit for US 6 West will be Exit 54A.

Current Exit 39

The I-84 East exit for CT 4 will be Exit 54 on the left.

The I-84 West exit will be Exit 54B on the right.

Current Exit 39A

The I-84 East exit for CT 9 is to be Exit 55 and has Newington as a control city.

The I-84 West exit is also Exit 55 but has New Britain as a control city.

Current Exit 40

The I-84 East exit for CT 9 is to be Exit 55 and has Newington as a control city.

The I-84 exit for CT 71 in West Hartford is to be Exit 56.

Current Exit 41

The I-84 exit for South Main Street is to be Exit 57 and have Elmwood as a control city headed east.

The South Main Street exit headed west is also Exit 57, but no control city.

Current Exit 42

The I-84 East exit for Park Road is to be Exit 58.

The I-84 West exit for Trout Brook Drive will be Exit 58A.

Current Exit 43 (WB)

The I-84 West exit for Park Road will Exit 58B.

Current Exit 44

The I-84 East exit for Prospect and New Park Avenues is to be Exit 59.

While the I-84 West exit for Prospect and New Park Avenues is to be Exit 59A.

Current Exit 45 (WB)

The I-84 West exit for Flatbush Avenue is to become Exit 59B.

Current Exit 46

The exit for Sisson Avenue in Hartford will be Exit 60. Heading east this is a Left Exit.

The Sisson Avenue exit, also Exit 60 heading east is on the right.

Current Exit 47 (WB)

The I-84 West exit for Sigourney Street is to be Exit 61A.

Current Exit 48A/B (48 WB)

The I-84 East exit for Asylum Street and Capitol Avenue will also be Exit 61A.

The I-84 West exit for Asylum Street is to be Exit 61B.

Current Exit 49

The I-84 East exit for Ann Uccello Street is to be Exit 61B.

Current Exit 50

The I-84 East exit for Main Street is to become Exit 62A.

Current Exit 51

The I-84 West exit for I-91 South first leads to US 44 West, also to become Exit 62A.

The I-91 North exit in Hartford will be Exit 62B.

Current Exit 52 (EB)

The I-91 South exit on I-84 East is to be Exit 62C.

Current Exit 53 (EB)

The US 44 exit on I-84 East will be Exit 63A.

Current Exit 54 (WB)

The Downtown Hartford exit on I-84 West will also be Exit 63A.

Current Exit 55 (EB)

The West CT 2 exit on I-84 East will be Exit 63B.

But on I-84 West, also Exit 63B, it is a left exit.

Current Exit 56

The Governors Street exit on I-84 East will be Exit 63C and includes the control city of Downtown East Hartford.

But on I-84 West, only the Street is given.

Current Exit 57

The Roberts Street/Silver Lane/Burnside Avenue exit on I-84 East will be Exit 64.

The CT 15 South exit on I-84 West will be Exit 64A.

Current Exit 58

The Roberts Street/Silver Lane/Burnside Avenue exit on I-84 West will be Exit 64B.

Current Exit 59

The I-384 East exit will now be Exit 67. Heading east the control city is Providence.

Heading West the ramp also serves as the exit to Spencer Street and Silver Lane.

Current Exit 60

The US 6/44 and Middle Turnpike West exit on I-84 East is to be Exit 68.

The exit sign on I-84 West does not include the US 6 shield.

Current Exit 61

The I-291 West exit is to become Exit 69.

Current Exit 62 (EB)

The Buckland Street exit on I-84 East will be Exit 70.

Current Exit 63

The CT 30/83 exit on I-84 East will become Exit 71.

The sign on I-84 West has Manchester as an additional control city.

Current Exit 64/65 (EB)

The CT 30/83 exits on I-84 East will now be one, Exit 72.

Current Exit 64 (WB)

The CT 30/83 exit on I-84 West has the same number but a different control city, Vernon Business District.

Current Exit 65 (WB)

The CT 30 exit on I-84 West is to be Exit 73.

Current Exit 66

The Tunnel Road exit will become Exit 75.

Current Exit 67

The CT 31 exit will be Exit 77.

Current Exit 68

The CT 195 exit is to be Exit 81.

Current Exit 69

The CT 74 to US 44 exit will now be Exit 84.

Current Exit 70

The CT 32 exit on is to be Exit 85.

Current Exit 71

The CT 320 exit will become Exit 87.

Current Exit 72

The CT 89 Exit is to become Exit 92.

Current Exit 73

The CT 190 Exit to Union will be Exit 93.

Current Exit 74

The CT 171 Exit to Union and Holland, MA is going to be Exit 97, headed east the sign only has Holland, MA.

The sign heading west has both Holland and Union.
