This exit list contains both the new milepost based exit number and old sequential exit number after MassDOT converted I-290 to the Geographic Reference or Milepost Exit Numbering system in August 2021, the last route to be renumbered. MassDOT started converting exit numbers in October 2020 starting with the routes in eastern and southern parts of the state. This project was first planned for 2016, but eventually postponed. The current list extends the mileage of I-395 from the CT border, duplicating the continued current sequential numbers for the 2 interstates. MassDOT added 'dual mile posts' that list the I-395 mileage that will be used for the exit numbers, along with the mileage of I-290. These were added after the exits were renumbered.

*Numbers in ( ) were the proposed numbers from the 2016 postponed renumbering project.

**I-290's milepost are not used for the new exit numbers, rather the exit numbers are a continuation of I-395's, I-290's southern end will be the start for dual milepost numbers that will list both I-290 and I-395's mileage. In a response to a comment I made to MassDOT regarding this decision and why, perhaps another option, such as continuing CT's numbers for I-395 and starting I-290's mileage at I-90, was not considered. I got this response:

"To minimize potential driver confusion, we are continuing the I-395 numbering along I-290 to replicate the present exit numbering, which is continuous from Webster to Marlborough.   As part of this project, the existing mileposts on I-290 will be replaced with ‘dual’ mile markers showing mileage for both I-395 and I-290.

MassDOT may consider re-designating I-290 as an extension of I-395 at a later date based on driver response to the new exit numbering and the ‘dual’ mile markers.  However, any such re-designation would have to be reviewed by AASHTO and approved by FHWA before it could actually be implemented."
