Note: This is a List of Exits on Freeways along I-74's proposed route, using information gathered from road trips along the I-74 corridor. Exit signage assumes I-74 is built as planned and current exits along existing freeways will not change after the roadways are upgraded to an Interstate. I-74 mileage is for potential future exit numbers when I-74 is signed along existing routes; numbers based on difference between existing exit numbers, map calculations and, for proposed construction project sections, mileage listed in NCDOT STIP documents. I have also used mileage presented from the NCDOT Strategic Highway Corridors website, where it did not conflict with my own records. Most speculative exit locations not official. Those listed for US 74 east of Whiteville, and speculative exits in between are from information gathered from the I-74 Feasibility Study released in Dec. 2005. NCDOT in the summer of 2012 replaced US 74 mileposts east of NC 41 with I-74 posts, the last mile marker being in the town of Delco about 8-9 miles east of where I-74's proposed routing is to leave US 74-76, the last mile number listed is 270. NCDOT added exit numbers along the existing exits along this stretch in the first half of 2013. (B) Whether this means a change in I-74's official route is unknown at this time.
*(
)Indicates former US 311 exit number that was changed to I-74 based
number in November and December 2008.
**( )Indicates no Exit Number currently assigned, assumes exit number
based on mileage from previous numbered exit(s).
***NCDOT changed exit numbers along US 220 during the summer of 2013
from those based on US 220 mileposts to those that reflect I-73's
proposed mileage starting at the SC border. This increased the exit
numbers by 17. Also during this time, US 220 was moved back on its old
alignment replacing Alternate/Business 220.
****Exit numbers
initially listed in NCDOT Contract Documents were in error, these
mileage counts were, it turns out about 26 miles too long. Originally,
the Laurinburg to NC 710 segment had numbers that ranged from 207 to
226. When I inquired with NCDOT about the possible problem, I got
an I-74 mileage spreadsheetA which confirmed the NCDOT
mileage was off, but still had numbers around 15 miles longer than mine.
However, when
NCDOT completed the last to open section of I-74 from NC 710 to NC 41 in
the Fall of 2008 the exit numbers equaled or were very similar to my
own. Obviously NCDOT had discovered the problem, though exactly what
caused it is unknown, the only thing that matters is that they appear to
be correct now.
Meanwhile, they
covered up the exit numbers on the Laurinburg Bypass that matched those
on the new section. In April and early May 2009 they re-did the
mileposts and exit numbers on the Bypass to conform to those listed
above, presumably the final correct numbers.
*****Exit under
Feasibility Study Alternative 1 that would just upgrade US 74. If
Alternative 2 is chosen, a southern bypass of Laurel Hill will be built
resulting in 2 additional exits on both sides of the bypass.
*I-285
is the future designation for the US 52 freeway from I-40 to I-85. NCDOT
indicates US 52 from I-40 to I-74, if upgraded to interstate standards,
would also be designated I-285.
For
more, go HERE.
t-temporary use of I-74 numbers and Future I-74 designation to connect
I-74 to interstate 40 before the Beltway opens. Could have become an
I-x74 when the W-S Beltway is completed, however NCDOT has designated it
NC 192, so it doesn't have to bring the roadway up to Interstate
standards.
