This exit list contains both the new exit number and old sequential exit number after MassDOT converted I-95 to the Geographic Reference or Milepost Exit Numbering system in April 2021. The exit renumbering occurred in 4 sections, each section was completed before the next begun starting at the NH border. The sections were: NH Border to Route 128 (Completed 2/8/21), US 1 to US 20 (Completed 3/25/21), I-90/Mass Pike to I-93/US 1 (Completed 4/13/21), and Neponset Street to the RI border (Completed morning of 4/22/21). MassDOT started converting exit numbers in October 2020 with routes starting in the southeastern part of the state. This project was first planned for 2016, but eventually postponed. Exit sign information includes those from project plans for Project 608024, Attleboro to Norwood (2019-2021) and 608025 Reading to Lynnfield (2020-2022), courtesy of Charlene White at MassDOT, and may not reflect current signage.

*Numbers in [ ] proposed for the postponed 2016 Renumbering Project.

** Exit not listed in new MassDOT List.

***A comment sent by AARoads member PHLBOS to MassDOT about the proposed renumbering the Route 30 exit as 39B and the I-90 exit as 39A, because the Mass Pike actually crosses I-95 south of where MA 30 crosses, however MassDOT did not change their proposed renumbering. The Recreation Road exit did not receive a number since the ramp will be removed in the near future, the existing auxiliary sign for Recreation Road on I-95 North was revised to say use Exits 39 A/B.

Recommended Numbers from 2016: MassDOT was to review the proposed exit numbers for possible changes prior to creating the new signs, these are some changes I suggested, some of which were made with the 2019 numbers:

1. Exit 1 SB. The MA 1A exit SB is listed as Exit 1, but there are also Exits 1A and 1B proposed for current Exits 2A and 2B. Following the precedent of other route lists, this should be Exit 0.

2. A number for the future Dedham St. exit was not listed in 2016 MassDOT documents, the number 25 makes the most sense, since it is located at milepost 25.1. Project documents listed the sequential number to be 11C, the 2020 project documents list it as 25.

3. Mass Pike Exits. The original plan northbound was to have the Pike ramp exits numbered 39A -39C, the last for the Recreation Road exit, and that the order of exits should be in the order the intersecting route crosses the highway. As has been suggested by others, I would make Recreation Road Exit 38D, make the MA 30 Exit 39A and the I-90 Exit 39B, this would be in reverse order northbound.

4. Washington Street exit in Woburn is at Mile 55.1 and proposed to be Exit 55A, meaning the I-93 Exits are 55B and 55C. Since there is no Exit 54, I would fudge the number to make Washington Street Exit 54, then the I-93 exits could be 55A and 55B.

5. The MA 128 Exit is proposed to be 64, but the I-95 ramps cross MA 128 at Milepost 65, therefore I would renumber this as Exit 65.

6. The Centre Street exit in Danvers is southbound only and is given the proposed number 67C, however Exits 67A and 67 B for MA 114 are northound only, meaning there is no need for a suffixed exit, it should be Exit 67.

7. The proposed exit numbers for the MA 62 and US 1 exits are 69A and 69B. However, US 1 is at milepost 69.9 and there is no proposed Exits 70. I would make MA 62 Exit 69 and US 1 Exit 70.
