*This exit list contains both the existing exit number and the proposed exit number from 2016 when MassDOT planned to convert I-291 to the Geographic Reference or Milepost Exit Numbering system. MassDOT awarded a contract to replace the exit numbers in December 2015 and was supposed to be switching over routes in western and southern parts of the state in 2016, however the project was postponed. When MassDOT announced a new effort at exit renumbering in November 2019, the agency said I-291's numbers would not be changed, due to the close proximity of the exits. The proposed numbers are included in case this plan is ever revised.
