This exit list contains both the current exit number and proposed future exit number when MassDOT converts I-290 to the Geographic Reference or Milepost Exit Numbering system. MassDOT plans to start converting exit numbers in late summer 2020 starting with the routes in western and southern parts of the state. This project was first planned for 2016, but eventually postponed. The future numbers listed are those provided at the MassDOT Exit Renumbering Project website, downloaded Nov. 21, 2019.The current list extends the mileage of I-395 from the CT border, duplicating the continued current sequential numbers.

*Numbers in ( ) were the proposed numbers from the 2016 postponed renumbering project.

**I-290's exit numbers are to be a continuation of I-395's, I-290's southern end will be the start for dual milepost numbers. In a response to a comment I made to MassDOT regarding this decision and why, perhaps another option, such as continuing CT's numbers for I-395 and starting I-290's mileage at I-90, was not considered. I got this response:

"To minimize potential driver confusion, we are continuing the I-395 numbering along I-290 to replicate the present exit numbering, which is continuous from Webster to Marlborough.   As part of this project, the existing mileposts on I-290 will be replaced with ‘dual’ mile markers showing mileage for both I-395 and I-290.

MassDOT may consider re-designating I-290 as an extension of I-395 at a later date based on driver response to the new exit numbering and the ‘dual’ mile markers.  However, any such re-designation would have to be reviewed by AASHTO and approved by FHWA before it could actually be implemented."
